What to expect in a therapy session at Northcote Consulting
People can often be concerned when they make a booking to see a psychologist (or a new psychologist) and may feel nervous not knowing what the process entails. While all therapists use different approaches, at Northcote Consulting you can expect the first one or two sessions to focus on us developing a shared understanding of the things that have led you to the decision to make an appointment and figuring out some goals associated with seeking support.
We will then work together to see how patterns and thinking styles that we can identify emerge and begin to work on strategies and increasing your awareness of these patterns. We find that through combining some new strategies and skills with some new ways of looking at challenges we can improve our wellbeing. When we work with you on these skills, we keep in mind the information we know from research about what works for the specific issues you are facing (evidence based) and then work with you to identify which of these might suit your own needs.
We find that some strategies can work quite quickly with a bit of practice inside and outside sessions while work on learning to look at things in new ways may take a little longer. Importantly, the work we do will continue to focus on the needs and goals you have set (often with the support of your GP).
